Writing an investment memo with complete sentences fleshes out more meaning than when you build a slide deck. Memos are not just about sharing ideas, you realize that during this process of writing the memo you strengthen your thought process and create more ideas.

 

An investment memo is a powerful tool that can be used to build a powerful fundraising narrative and importantly articulate the key components of a venture with a rationale for investing in it.

Bessemer Venture Partners had released early investment memos of some of the most defining startups which have gone ahead to become market-creating behemoths such as Shopify,Twilio,Twitch,Fiverr and more. Read the memos that provide a glimpse of those winning entrepreneurs before they were famous here.

The Youtube investment memo from Sequoia, which was made public in a lawsuit of Viacom Vs Google (Youtube) for a “brazen” attempt to allow people to post Copyrighted content on youtube. Roelof Botha had to disclose his investment memorandum as part of his testimony. The memo can be found below -

Rippling Investor Memo, which laid out their pitch in prose. Rippling raised a $45M Series A without a pitch deck, led by Kleiner Perkins. Read their memo here.

Airbase Investor Memo, which helped them raise $60M in Series B funding within a span of 10 days. Read their memo here.

OnDecks used an Investor M​emo to raise their Series A funding, it laid out their ambitious vision for “a modern education institution for the internet”.Read a synopsis of their memo here.
